Document: How To Upgrade Firmware on a DI-206 Router
1. Introduction
The purpose of this document is to explain how to perform a firmware upgrade to a DI-206 router. In the DI-
206 router, the method of firmware update is Trivial File Transfer Protocol or TFTP. To carry out a firmware
update, your required to have a TFTP server in your network. As this is a requirement for firmware update of
the DI-206 Router D-Link have provided you with a TFTP server built in to the RouteMan configuration
software, and hence you need to have RouteMan installed on a PC before firmware update can be done. Also,
as TFTP uses TCPIP as the transport protocol this also need to be installed and correctly working. Before
proceeding.
2. RouteMan Configuration
When you execute routeman, you will see the following screen. Select the Preference box, and tick the TFTP
server then click ok. Now leave RouteMan running and connect to the DI-206 Router by either the console
port or by using your browser.
3. PC Setup for Firmware Update.
Copy the firmware file into a new or existing folder on your C: driver. For example
C:\DI206\206r182.hdr. It would be beneficial to have RouteMan and the new firmware on the same PC.
4. Router Settings for Firmware Upgrade
If you use your web browser, you will see a screen similar to the one shown below. Select Maintenance, then
‘Software Update’
Select the ‘Save’ button to save the settings. Once the above is done, power down the routearn d power it back
on. You can see if the firmware update has started by going to the Routeman screen. Please note, it can take
up to 2 minutes to start the update.
After the firmware has been updated, restart router to check its firmware version. To dtoh is, select ‘System
Information’. Screen shown below.
5. Router Setting through Console Screen.
- Main Menu – System Maintenance – Software Update -
Setup as above saving the settings. Now Reboot the router, either by powering down router or selecting
- Main Menu – System Maintenance – System Restart.

Typical Internet Configuration for DI-206 Router
(For Single user Internet Account, with static or dynamic IP address.)
1. Introduction
This document explains how to connect to the Internet using a single user account from an
Internet Service Provider. The IP network is a private network and is chosen by the installer.
In the example below the private IP network is 195.10.10.xxx. The service provider may
either provide you with a static IP address or more often a dynamic IP address, that is to say
the IP address is assigned to the router at connection time. A local network IP address still
needs to be assigned to the router.
It is assumed the network is already configured and working in terms of network adapters
and drivers installed and configured.
2. Information required from the ISP.
A certain amount of information is required from your ISP. See list below.
· IP address (only for static IP address connections)
· Username
· Password
· ISDN Telephone number to dial
· DNS (consists of primary domain name controller IP, and name)
3. Router Configuration
It is best if you were first to do a factory reset on the router to ensure uniform settings. To
do a factory reset, attach to the router using the supplied serial cable. From the Main Menu
select ‘System Maintenance’ then ‘Factory Reset’
The simplest way to configure the router for the Internet is to install then follow the Internet
connection Wizard. To run the wizard, you must first install the RouteMan software. This
software is provided on a floppy. Install RouteMan on to your PC first then first task then is
to assign the router its IP address, in this example its 195.10.10.1.

Setting Up Email Server on Port 25 in DI-206 Router
Introduction
In a local area network you may want to send and receive email direct to your desktops via a DI-206 router. For this,
you will need email client software installed in every desktop, for example Microsoft’s OutLook Express. In a network
environment to send and receive email you will also need an email server for example Microsoft Exchange Server. The
function of this server is to manage the email traffic in your local and wide area networks, this also includes email traffic
too and from the Internet. Email users are then all configured in your email server, the server needs to talk to the router
in order to deliver email packets to the ISP’s email server for further processing. Due to cost implications its now quite
common to share a single user ISP account, and also a single user email account to all of your networked users. For
configuration of the router for setting up Internet, please refer to a separate setup document obtainable from D-Link
Technical Support. The purpose of this document is to go though setting up the router to send and receive SMTP email
from a local Email Server while using NAT (Network Address Translator).
